Haunted by  the data demons...

A Modern Fable from HVAC Data Tracker™
The Unhappy Control Room Operator

Once upon time there was an operations manager who had a control room. In many ways it was a dream come true. He thought he should love his control room but he wasn’t happy. Twelve different control terminals from twelve different vendors glowed all around. They haunted him.

Each system contained a wealth of data, but since each had its own software, he couldn’t standardize the information. His operations should have the benefited from all the investment in hardware but he knew his man-machine interface suffered because of bickering between the control room personnel and mechanics.

Worse yet, he had just received word; the funding for 2 of his computer room operators had just been cut. He was left with only one cantankerous computer operator. Now his information flow would be further reduced. He was very troubled. The manager wanted to get data to mechanics in order to use the high priced technology effectively but he was confused by the different software run on the different machines. He just couldn’t standardize his data presentation. Then one day while he was surfing the web one day he discovered http://www.hvacdata.com.

There he glimpsed potential happiness. He contracted with HVACDATA and had all his systems linked to a single software package. Then he proudly passed out work orders based on spread sheets. He was delighted to be getting some real usefulness from his multiple control systems. Information flowed coherently from all of them like fine wine. He gave out printed color coded reports on a daily basis so mechanics could fix anything indicated as wrong.

Since they were given these reports in the same format repeatedly, they soon learned to read and interpret them. The mechanics where thrilled because their time was used effectively fixing real problems. The color indicating trouble disappeared from the daily reports. Everything fell into place. He had developed a truly useful pro-active organization. Complaints were down and energy savings were up. His superiors noticed this initiative and gave him a raise. Now he was considering PDA’.s or cell phones for the men who would receive the data in the same format. He felt happy and loved. So can you. Get a system that works.
